Guided Reading Level for Your Children
Here at the Shelby Library we love to help out. Anything the public needs, we try our best to help them out. Now I'm not saying that we work miracles or anything, but if we can't find the answers we try to help you find someone who can!!
Many of the times we would be getting patrons to come in that just needs to find a business. Whether it be the businesses phone number, fax number or just point to where the building is!! Many patrons heard a book on the radio and would love to read it, but just can't remember the title nor the author. But they remember the radio station!! We also get some people that come in and say I picked up this book not realizing it was part of the series. Do you know the titles of the others and do you have them? Or they saw a book on the book stand somewhere and want to read it but just can't remember the title nor the author, nor what it's all about but knows for sure, for sure that the cover of the book was Blue!
Those are just a few that I can think of at the moment of the things we Librarians are required to either answer or find someone who can :) :)
It's fun. It's fun when you like to do research and we do. We love looking up things on the internet. Usually that's how we find our answers for you. Good old Google.com!!! There is also another site that we use frequently to help out with series questions or just finding the author. It's called Fantastic Fiction. (You may click on the link and it will take you right to the site). It's a wonderful site and we Librarians love using it. So easy to use and easy to print as well.
Many times we would get Parents come in during school time of course, but also during summer break to help their kids get ahead in their reading. So they would come in and ask what is good for my child to read? We do have some recommendation's for them, but lately the Public Schools and even the Homeschooling programs have specific Reading Levels that they want the children to be in. In many different Programs for schools they use different types of testing for these kids and some of these programs don't quite share it with Librarians. The only thing, Parents don't quite understand for a while there that we didn't know what the whole "Guided Reading Level F" or Lexile 80 meant.
So we Librarians researched information about the Guided Reading Levels that many schools are using and also the Lexile Levels. When we found the right books for the right levels we thought putting up posters about them for the parents to find them easily enough. And guess what? It works!!!!
Here are some of the posters that we have used to showcase the reading levels for the kids as well as for the parents:
