Scrabble Club

Beginning of Summer in 2015 a Patron came into the Library and asked if we could start a Scrabble Club.  She stated that she belongs to one but they meet at odd times and half of the time she can't make it and wondered if we could have one close to home for her.  As we Librarians like to accommodate things for people we said sure.

I had NO idea how much fun I would be having.

I have always enjoyed the game Words with Friends but with the Scrabble Club you get to see the people you are beating (HAHA) and you get to have actual conversations with an actual human being.

We meet every third Thursday of the month at 9am and stay until people need to leave.  We do have a set time for it to end but sometimes you get so caught up with the game that time just doesn't matter anymore.  And I know I have stated beforehand that I am not an early riser but as long as there is coffee (and at this Library, we ALWAYS have the coffee percolating) I'm sort of functioning.  Many of the folks that do come do bring their own drinks so that is always nice for us.

It started out a little small, one or two people at the most coming.  Then word started to spread and I started to get 4 to 6 people coming and just having a wonderful time.  There are days where we chat about what's been going on since the last time we saw each other, any books we might have read that we would like to share.  And then there are times where we don't talk....like AT ALL.  It's so quiet you would think we were in a Library ;)  Many of the times we start getting big words or getting down to the last few tiles with the Q and Z still in play that needs to take up all of our attention that we just can't talk anymore.

One time a lady came in and said she had time to play only one game because her schedule was so hectic that day but she wanted to come to Scrabble Club.  To her it calms her mind when she plays Scrabble.  Sort of starts her day just right when she is with friends and words.  I was just so happy that we were able to help her out.

A patron came in one day and noticed our sign that stated we have a Scrabble Club and she has this beautiful board that she hasn't used in a lot of years and asked if she could donate it.  We definitely said yes because face it, you can never have too many Scrabble boards (or is that books? so confusing sometimes) and when she brought hers in I was speechless.  I thought it was one of those regular boards.  Oh no, my dear.  This is a "special" kind of board.  Words just doesn't describe this board so here are a few pictures to show you:

And it SWIVELS!!!!!!  We have enjoyed playing on this we don't even pick up the other boards.

It's wonderful to see people who never met before bond over something as simple as words.  People that are from a different class, a different part of the area, never met before come together and share their love of words.  I am always seeing smiles on their faces despite the fact that it is 9am in the morning and in Winter time no less.  I am so happy that we have started this club and I hope that we can keep at this for a very long time.
