Miss Kelsey's Review
From Flames to Freedom: Faith Rides the Rails
By: Skaidrite Rita Sparks
When someone asks you to review their book for the Recommended Reading it’s an honor and a privilege. And when that book turns out to be a memoir of history itself its indescribable. Let me honor the author Skaidrite Rita Sparks by reviewing her memoir and having all e-readers get a taste of real history unfolding before their eyes.
From our history books we got the idea of what World War II did to our world. We understand the turmoil of the Nazi and Soviet occupations of that time. But to fully realize, to fully feel what was really happening not just to the world but to the people that got caught up in the devilish crimes of World War II then I recommend reading From Flames to Freedom: Faith Rides the Rails. As someone who is fascinated by history and the wars that took place, I was captivated by this book. As I was reading this memoir, my mind took me straight to where Skaidrite, also known as Rita, was shoved from her lovely childhood with friends and family to being scared for her friends and family who were yanked from their very homes and their very lives all because they were Latvian and there were Jews living down the street. As Rita watches homes burned to ash she wonders how will there ever be peace in her land again? They keep telling her to be patient, to have faith. Because of everything that she has witnessed, that she has seen first hand what evil men with power can do, how can she keep her faith? How can anyone be patient with all of this turmoil going on around them?
Ann Frank showed us what it was like for a Jew living in that time frame. Sparks now shows us what it was like for a Letvian girl living in that predicament. If you are looking for something to read this weekend and like to read history books from someone who actually lived through it then this is the book for you. If you like to read a book about someone coming from tough trials in life and needs their faith, their courage to get them through, then reserve this book today at your local library and get pulled into this memoir like I did.
