Welcome a True Crime Author

Shelby Library welcomes Tobin Buhk, a True Crime Author who get's the dirt on gruesome murders while also getting dirty looking for clues to answer some of your questions about Michigan's murderers, and serial killers.
Buhk gets so into the mysteries about murders that have taken place in Michigan, he has even volunteered for jobs, just to get the facts straight for his readers.  His first book, Cause of Death (Prometheus Books, 2007), he volunteered at a county morgue to understand the froensic part of an investigation.  For that particular book he followed Ken County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen D. Cohle, a man who unravels mysteries using forensics and science.  Dr. Cohle was such a huge help with Buhk's first book, the good doctor was available for Buhk's second book Skeletons in the Closet (Prometheus, 2008).
Here is a list of Tobin Buhk's books:
  • True Crime Michigan (Stackpole Books, 2011)
  • True Crime in the Civil War (Stackpole Books, 2012
  • The Shocking Case of Helmuth Schmidt (The History Press, 2013)
  • ...And his latest book Michigan's Strychnine Saint (History Press, 2014)
Shelby Library is honored to have Buhk come and discuss his latest book Michigan's Strychnine Saint, the story of Mary McKnight a widow who may have murdered as many as a dozen people.  Take a stroll back in time to gaslight-era Northern Michigan, where pioneer families carved their lives out of the area's deciduous forests, when death by accident and disease were commonplace.  Visit a county jail, 1903, and meet the woman who later became known as the "Michigan Borgia."
