Rainbow Loom @ Your Library

Image
You have heard of them.  Kids are wearing them everywhere.  They are called the Rainbow Loom Rubber Band Bracelets!!!!  So many cool designs kids are coming up with and loving everything about these kind of bracelets. There are literally hundreds of designs right on YouTube that you can make right at home and they are VERY cool designs.  So many kids are making these we felt that here at the Shelby Library we should have an option of teaching kids that don't have computers and see the new designs coming up.  Our wonderful Ms. Samantha has stepped up to the plate to teach herself on how to make the Rubber bands bracelets and she has done a fabulous job setting up tutorials for kids to follow while making these bracelets. Kids were already asking for the next class of the Rubber Bands!!!!!  It is so exciting to see the young generation interested into something that isn't all on Television or Video Games!  Stay tuned for more excitem...

Guided Reading Level for Your Children

Here at the Shelby Library we love to help out.  Anything the public needs, we try our best to help them out. Now I'm not saying that we work miracles or anything, but if we can't find the answers we try to help you find someone who can!! Many of the times we would be getting patrons to come in that just needs to find a business.  Whether it be the businesses phone number, fax number or just point to where the building is!!  Many patrons heard a book on the radio and would love to read it, but just can't remember the title nor the author.  But they remember the radio station!!  We also get some people that come in and say I picked up this book not realizing it was part of the series.  Do you know the titles of the others and do you have them?  Or they saw a book on the book stand somewhere and want to read it but just can't remember the title nor the author, nor what it's all about but knows for sure, for sure that the cover of the book was Blue! ...

Librarian Picks

Image
So many people (patrons to us Librarians) are always asking us the same question:  "What do you recommend I read?" So we have made a plan of displaying books that we Pick and you can check them out. Nice and neat and it's right were people walk in.  We would usually have a few walk in wanting to find something and stop dead in their tracks seeing these books all laid out for them and seeing that they are LIBRARIANS picks makes all the difference in the world for them.  Then they get to really know their librarians.   So now that we have immersed ourselves in the social media I thought about a flyer/poster of all the books that we Librarians pick for others don't go to our library see what other books are out there and basically what they are about.  We Librarians love to give information out to our patrons even if they don't go to our library!! So here you go"Patrons of the World" a little background on books that we Librarians have rece...

Michigan Authors

Image
Here at Shelby Library we pride ourselves into knowing about Local Authors.  Getting to meet them.  Getting their books and having a Meet and Greet the Author.  It is an absolute plus for us Librarians to be able to share Local Authors with their Patrons. Shelby Library is from Michigan.  West side of Michigan (trust me, it makes the difference) and we are proud of our heritage here in Michigan.  Michigan is the best state to find Fun, Excitement and Food.  Many people think of Michigan as the Mid-West of America; the one places where you can find produce still growing from the ground and not some Science's Lab!!!!  And they are right.  West Michigan for example is one of the highest produce of Asparagus, Cherries, and of course Corn.  We love growing things.  Detroit has been known for many years as producing Cars and even though many of the Countries across the Ocean, Detroit still has it's hand in Automobiles, Sports (Detroit Lions...

Welcome a True Crime Author

Image
Shelby Library welcomes Tobin Buhk, a True Crime Author who get's the dirt on gruesome murders while also getting dirty looking for clues to answer some of your questions about Michigan's murderers, and serial killers. Buhk gets so into the mysteries about murders that have taken place in Michigan, he has even volunteered for jobs, just to get the facts straight for his readers.  His first book, Cause of Death (Prometheus Books, 2007), he volunteered at a county morgue to understand the froensic part of an investigation.  For that particular book he followed Ken County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen D. Cohle, a man who unravels mysteries using forensics and science.  Dr. Cohle was such a huge help with Buhk's first book, the good doctor was available for Buhk's second book Skeletons in the Closet (Prometheus, 2008). Here is a list of Tobin Buhk's books: True Crime Michigan (Stackpole Books, 2011) True Crime in the Civil War (Stackpole Books, 2012 The Shock...
